Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. It owes its violet color to irradiation, impurities of iron and in some cases other transition metals, and the presence of other trace elements, which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions. Amethyst ranges in color from light, pinkish-purple to deep purple, the darker the purple the more valuable.

Description
Originating in many locations around the world like Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Uruguay, and the Far East, natural Amethyst is plentiful. Some of the largest geodes are large enough for a person to stand in. It is still the most valued of the quartz family. Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February. Amethyst is believed to be a natural tranquilizer to relieve stress and strain, soothe irritability, balance mood swings, and relieve anger, rage, fear and anxiety. It may activate spiritual awareness, open intuition and enhance psychic abilities. It has found a meaningful place throughout the ages for both royalty and religion.
