This special breastplate is adorned with rare bronze trade beads, red trade beads, horse hair from the mane, bronze tacked leather ornament and a trophy scalp from an early American.

Description

Circa 1800’s Outstanding example of a Native American Chief’s breastplate.

The breastplate was originally used as protection against arrows and spears, however when firearms were introduced, they became useless as protection.

Breastplates became an ornament used in ceremonies and meetings. Elaborate and decorated hair-pipe breastplates such as this one, were a coveted symbol of prosperity.
